O CAPITANO! MIO CAPITANO!

Di WALT WHITMAN (1865)

O Capitano! mio Capitano! il nostroviaggio tremendo è finito
La nave ha superato ogni tempestal'ambito premio è vinto
Il porto è vicinoodo le campaneil popolo è esultante

Gli occhi seguono la solida chiglial'audace e altero vascello;
Ma o cuore! cuore! cuore!
O rosse gocce sanguinanti sul ponte
Dove è disteso il mio Capitano
Caduto mortofreddato.

O Capitano! mio Capitano! àlzati e ascolta le campane; àlzati
Svetta per te la bandieratrilla per te la trombaper te
I mazzi di fiorile ghirlande coi nastrile rive nere di folla
Chiamano tele masse ondeggiantii volti fissi impazienti
Qua Capitano! padre amato!
Questo braccio sotto il tuo capo!
É un puro sogno che sul ponte
Cadesti mortofreddato.

Ma non risponde il mio Capitanoimmobili e bianche le sue labbra
Mio padre non sente il mio braccionon ha più polso e volere;
La nave è ancorata sana e salvail viaggio è finito
Torna dal viaggio tremendo col premio vinto la nave;
Rive esultatee voi squillatecampane!
Io con passo angosciato cammino sul ponte
Dove è disteso il mio Capitano
Caduto mortofreddato.

O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!

Poem of WALT WHITMAN (1865)

O Captain! my Captain! our fearfultrip is done
The ship has weather'd every rackthe prize we sought is won
The port is nearthe bells I hearthe people all exulting

While follow eyes the steady keelthe vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red
Where on the deck my Captain lies
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up-for you the flag is flung-for you the bugle trills
For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths-for you the shores a-crowding
For you they callthe swaying masstheir eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck
You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answerhis lips are pale and still
My father does not feel my armhe has no pulse nor will
The ship is anchor'd safe and soundits voyage closed and done
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shoresand ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread
Walk the deck my Captain lies
Fallen cold and dead.
